Out and About with the Dude
The Dude, my family's Wirehaired Dachshund, and I had a great time demonstrating my training method at the BC Book Fair in Vancouver last month, and since then I've been doing a lot of interviews. It's been great to get opportunities to share my new method of dog training and let people know that there is an alternative to ineffective training as usual with choke chains and so on. Yesterday there was a great column on my book, LET THE DOG DECIDE, in the Vancouver Province and an interview in the Toronto Star.
Thanks to my publishers for setting all these things up. They're running the Dude and me hard, but so far we're loving it! The schedule will include some public appearances, and I'll be posting information about them as soon as they're finalized. The Dude and I hope to make your acquaintance soon.

Hey Dale!!!!
I am 21 years old, my name is Emily, and i LOVE my dog!!! lol... I
just bought my first dog he is a 9 month old silky terrier, and he is
the love of my life! I have been reading allll kinds of information
about training him with his certain issues, and im finally finding some
helpful answers in your book Let the Dog Decide. i just got it from the
library, and so far it sounds like its something that will really
work.
But, I am a little excited about getting started, and have a few
questions already about certain things you speak about. If you dont have
time to answer these, just let me know, I wil understand, and i will
just have to keep reading until i figure it out! lol!!! But if you
have a second, i would really appreciate some expert advice!
Reggie has learned now not to chew on things, i did this by replacing
the ball of toilet paper, or the toothbrush, or the sock, with a chew
toy, and congratulating him, and playing with him with it. He has
responded so well!
He has also finally learned that potty is to be done outside the
house and at certain times of the day when we go for our walks!
HERE is what we still have problems with.
Walking nicely on a leash- I can get him to walk beside me by holding
his leash short, and he will pull for a while and struggle, but
eventually walk fine. BUT, the problem is, he doesnt know how to tell me
where he wants to go to the bathroom when he is on a short leash. He
wont stop at all to pee or poo, so we end up walking forever, and no
potty! I have tried to stop and if i say "go ahead" he will race off to
explore, but i cant get across to him that when i stop and say go, he
is supposed to actually GO potty! haha..
Coming When Called- He will do a great job on a leash of course, but
when off a leash, he will only come after many calls, and no matter
how frustrated i get i cant yell or speak in the Bad Boy voice, or he
wont come at all, but instead hide. He does this more so when there
are other dogs or children around. Otherwise he is quite good. How can
i get his attention when there are so many exciting things for him to
see and smell and meet! lol.. I have yet to try to use the long
line, because i dont have much of a yard, so i have to take him to a park
somewhere to do that one, and parks have SOOO many distractions for
him.
He Doesnt Like Dog treats. haha He wont even sniff them, let alone
work for them! lol, what else can i use that will get his attention that
is safe for him and wont make him throw up!
Basic Manners- I know how excited he gets when meeting new people,
but i need to somehow teach him it is not ok to jump up on them and lick
their face right off the bat. it makes people uncomfortable.
i know this sounds like a lot, but we have come really far with his
training. He was quite the reckless and destructive man when we got him
3 weeks ago, now its just a matter of tweaking things up, and getting
his attention!!!! I will keep reading,
but if you have any pointers or suggestions i could try i would LOVE
to hear them, like i said its my first dog, and i want to do
everything as well as i can, so there are no bahaviour issues down the road!!!
P.s. How is Canada??? i am from alberta originally but in Salt
Lake City Utah right now!! you should come down and do a seminar, i know
lots of Dog owners who need some tips!!!
Thanks again
Emily and Reggie!!
FRENCH DOGS CLAIM THE RIGHT TO DECIDE TOO!
Hello, I'm the happy owner of a 6 month old
Beauceron(large French shepherd-type dog also called
"bas-rouge" or "berger de Beauce")-German Shepherd
cross who has hugely benefitted from your teachings
and never ceases to impress people in general, but
most of all she impresses me! I think your method
really brings out the best in her.
After car traffic (and poor training and judgement on
my part) put a tragic end to 3 weeks of happiness with
a rescue dog, I thought I couldn't let that happen
twice and went looking for advice before I got another
dog- and by chance I randomely hit your book on the
web. Since then I have been recommanding it to
everyone, but of course language is a massive barrier,
so I was wondering:
-is there a French edition available?
-if there isn't, would you be interested in having
someone translating the book for you?
I've been studying English Linguistics for 5 years
and I specialize in translation. It would be an honour
to bring the Good Word to my fellow Frenchmen, who, as
much as they love dogs (I think France has the highest
dog-to-person ratio in the world), often fail in
training them properly. The very idea of putting a
puppy in a crate, ignoring it when it wants to attract
unwanted attention, or not encouraging it to jump up
on people makes you look a lunatic, but on the other
hand people will chain their dogs up all day or advise
you to put the puppy's nose in its mess to housetrain
it...
So here we go,I have no idea how it works in terms of
publishers and all that, but just in case you would
consider it, well, here I am!
And thank you for your brilliant work!
Best wishes,
Suzanne Sevestre
